- While it's not mentioned in the movie, 2
of the elven ring bearers feature prominently:
Elrond and Galadriel. The latter wears the
ring visibly. When the Fellowship leave Lothlorien,
Galadriel waves them good-bye. You can clearly
see a ring on her middle finger. This is,
in fact, one of the three that were forged
for the elves. The third ring is held by the
harbormaster at the Grey Havens (perhaps we'll
see him in part III). Because of the fact
that Galadriel has passed the test (not succumbing
to the lure of the Ring), she is allowed to
return to Middle Earth afterwards, returning
from the Undying Lands. - LowD
- Correction:
The third ring is actually held by Gandalf,
not the Shipwight. He gave the ring to
Gandalf when he came to Middle Earth.
And the test that Galadriel past allowed
her to go TO Valinore, the Undying Lands,
NOT return to Middle Earth. Once she (and
any Elf) got there they stayed. - Munkin
- Comment:
Actually, she didn't have to stay.
There was a point before the timeline
of the Lord of the Rings story line
where she was offered a chance to
come back across the sea. She refused,
partially in arrogance and partially
out of the belief that she could not
be forgiven for what she had done.

- In the books, not Arwen, but an elf named
Glorfindel speeds Frodo to Rivendell, after
he is stabbed at the Weathertop. Since he
no further features in the story, his role
was cut out in order to beef Arwen's. - LowD
- The name Argonath is directly derived from
the ancient Greek myth of the Argonauts. -
LowD
- In the movie, the distinction in appearance
of the various elven races is prominent. The
wood-elves (or Sylvan elves) have blond hair
(Legolas, Galadriel, etc.) whereas the High
Elves (or Sindar) have black hair (Elrond).
- LowD
- Correction:
According to Tolkien himself, ALL of the
elves had dark hair except for one family,
that of Galadriel who was a High Elf (Noldor).
The people of Lothlorien where Sindar
and Telerian elves, she was the only Noldor
there. - Munkin
- Comment:
Not sure about Tolkien saying that
ALL elves were dark-haired, but throughout
some books like the Silmarillion it
is said that a lot of elves were of
blonde colouring - no specific race.
For the most part, Vanyarin Elves
of Valinor are all blonde. i.e. Indis
of the Vanyar who was the second wife
of Finwe. Also it seems that there
were a lot of Telerin Elves who were
of blonde hair. i.e. Galadriel's hair
is blonde coming from her mother's
side (Telerin origin). Her father
is Finarfin and his hair was darker
because he was Noldor. The Noldor
had darkish hair - Finwe was dark-haired
and Feanor was as well. Also make
note that dark hair was a very unique
beauty among elves because it is described
practically everywhere that Luthien
was one of the few elves of dark haired
beauty, and that Arwen was the first
to receive the dark beauty of Luthien.
- Edennos
- Comment:
Although Tolkien never really said
whether or not specific elves have
dark or light hair, I'm positive that
Legolas has blonde hair because it
said in "The Hobbit" that
his father, the King of the elves
of Mirkwood had blonde hair. - Eldawen
- Correction:
In the book it really says all elves
have BLONDE hair, except Elrond and
his daughter Arwen. Look at all the
other elves throughout the movie.
- wisledink
- Correction:
It DOES NOT say in the book that
all of the elves have either blonde
or dark hair. I disagree with
the statement "look at all
the other elves throughout the
movie." The movie should
not be a basis on the discussion
seeing as they messed so many
things up. I do not know what
possessed them to make all of
the silvan elves blonde, as they
differed somewhat. - Lady_of_Lorien
- Comment:
There are two categories of
elves: Light Elves and Dark
Elves. The Light ones' usually
have blonde hair and blue
eyes (Legolas, Galadriel,
etc.). The Dark ones' usually
have black or dark brown hair
and brown or black eyes (Elrond,
etc.). Now, Arwen has blue
eyes but dark hair that she
inherited from her parents.
Since her father, Elrond,
was a Dark Elf, her mother
must have been a Light Elf
who was the daughter of Galadriel
(a Light Elf). Mixed Elves
usually had a harder time
growing up, but for Arwen,
being the most beautiful creature,
it didn't seem too hard. =;)

This is not correct. In
the very few materials
where Tolkien uses the
term "Dark Elf",
it is only in regards
to whether or not they
(or their ancestors) "saw
the light" of the
trees in Valinor. As such,
Legolas is a Dark Elf,
as he is of Silvan heritage.
"Light Elf"
is only used in "The
Hobbit", and is equated
to the Vanyar, the first
clan of elves to reach
Valinor. None of these
elves ever returned to
Middle-Earth, so they
were never part of the
trilogy. At times, though,
Tolkien equates "Elf
of the Light", with
"High Elf",
i.e. all Vanyar, most
Noldor and Some Teleri.
Galadriel (and possibly
Celeborn -- Tolkien gives
conflicting information
about his lineage) is
the only high elf in the
trilogy. All others are
"dark elves".
High elf vs dark elf has
nothing whatsoever to
do with hair or eye color.
Lastly, Elrond Half-Elven
has a more complicated
lineage. He is 25% Noldor,
37.5% Human, and 37.5%
Sindar. (Source: Published

- Comment:
In my opinion, Legolas,
who was a Silvan elf,
could not really have
golden hair. Usually,
only the elves of the
Vanyarin race, or the
elves of the noble line
of Noldorin princes. Thus,
I think that the fact
that golden-hair had been
introduced by Peter Jackson
is just to make him more
'outstanding' as the only
elf in the fellowship.
(All others except Gandalf
had dark hair) - Gwindor
- Comment:
Nowhere does Tolkien say
that all of any Elvish
bloodline has any particular
color of hair. It is mentioned
with certain characters.
And beyond this whole
Galadriel and Legolas
stuff, Tolkien mentioned
in other books that some
Elves were redheads. It's
an incomplete dominant
gene. Check out http://www.luchau.org/writing/elven_genetics.htm
for more information.
