  • While it's not mentioned in the movie, 2 of the elven ring bearers feature prominently: Elrond and Galadriel. The latter wears the ring visibly. When the Fellowship leave Lothlorien, Galadriel waves them good-bye. You can clearly see a ring on her middle finger. This is, in fact, one of the three that were forged for the elves. The third ring is held by the harbormaster at the Grey Havens (perhaps we'll see him in part III). Because of the fact that Galadriel has passed the test (not succumbing to the lure of the Ring), she is allowed to return to Middle Earth afterwards, returning from the Undying Lands. - LowD
    • Correction: The third ring is actually held by Gandalf, not the Shipwight. He gave the ring to Gandalf when he came to Middle Earth. And the test that Galadriel past allowed her to go TO Valinore, the Undying Lands, NOT return to Middle Earth. Once she (and any Elf) got there they stayed. - Munkin
      • Comment: Actually, she didn't have to stay. There was a point before the timeline of the Lord of the Rings story line where she was offered a chance to come back across the sea. She refused, partially in arrogance and partially out of the belief that she could not be forgiven for what she had done. (Source: JRR Tolkien's books) - Adulithien

  • In the books, not Arwen, but an elf named Glorfindel speeds Frodo to Rivendell, after he is stabbed at the Weathertop. Since he no further features in the story, his role was cut out in order to beef Arwen's. - LowD

  • The name Argonath is directly derived from the ancient Greek myth of the Argonauts. - LowD

  • In the movie, the distinction in appearance of the various elven races is prominent. The wood-elves (or Sylvan elves) have blond hair (Legolas, Galadriel, etc.) whereas the High Elves (or Sindar) have black hair (Elrond). - LowD
    • Correction: According to Tolkien himself, ALL of the elves had dark hair except for one family, that of Galadriel who was a High Elf (Noldor). The people of Lothlorien where Sindar and Telerian elves, she was the only Noldor there. - Munkin
      • Comment: Not sure about Tolkien saying that ALL elves were dark-haired, but throughout some books like the Silmarillion it is said that a lot of elves were of blonde colouring - no specific race. For the most part, Vanyarin Elves of Valinor are all blonde. i.e. Indis of the Vanyar who was the second wife of Finwe. Also it seems that there were a lot of Telerin Elves who were of blonde hair. i.e. Galadriel's hair is blonde coming from her mother's side (Telerin origin). Her father is Finarfin and his hair was darker because he was Noldor. The Noldor had darkish hair - Finwe was dark-haired and Feanor was as well. Also make note that dark hair was a very unique beauty among elves because it is described practically everywhere that Luthien was one of the few elves of dark haired beauty, and that Arwen was the first to receive the dark beauty of Luthien. - Edennos
      • Comment: Although Tolkien never really said whether or not specific elves have dark or light hair, I'm positive that Legolas has blonde hair because it said in "The Hobbit" that his father, the King of the elves of Mirkwood had blonde hair. - Eldawen
      • Correction: In the book it really says all elves have BLONDE hair, except Elrond and his daughter Arwen. Look at all the other elves throughout the movie. - wisledink
        • Correction: It DOES NOT say in the book that all of the elves have either blonde or dark hair. I disagree with the statement "look at all the other elves throughout the movie." The movie should not be a basis on the discussion seeing as they messed so many things up. I do not know what possessed them to make all of the silvan elves blonde, as they differed somewhat. - Lady_of_Lorien
          • Comment: There are two categories of elves: Light Elves and Dark Elves. The Light ones' usually have blonde hair and blue eyes (Legolas, Galadriel, etc.). The Dark ones' usually have black or dark brown hair and brown or black eyes (Elrond, etc.). Now, Arwen has blue eyes but dark hair that she inherited from her parents. Since her father, Elrond, was a Dark Elf, her mother must have been a Light Elf who was the daughter of Galadriel (a Light Elf). Mixed Elves usually had a harder time growing up, but for Arwen, being the most beautiful creature, it didn't seem too hard. =;) - callistio
            • Correction: Any discussion of Elrond's coloring needs to take into account that he was not an elf but Halfelven. (Source: Reading the Books) - David Porter
            • Correction: This is not correct. In the very few materials where Tolkien uses the term "Dark Elf", it is only in regards to whether or not they (or their ancestors) "saw the light" of the trees in Valinor. As such, Legolas is a Dark Elf, as he is of Silvan heritage. "Light Elf" is only used in "The Hobbit", and is equated to the Vanyar, the first clan of elves to reach Valinor. None of these elves ever returned to Middle-Earth, so they were never part of the trilogy. At times, though, Tolkien equates "Elf of the Light", with "High Elf", i.e. all Vanyar, most Noldor and Some Teleri. Galadriel (and possibly Celeborn -- Tolkien gives conflicting information about his lineage) is the only high elf in the trilogy. All others are "dark elves". High elf vs dark elf has nothing whatsoever to do with hair or eye color. Lastly, Elrond Half-Elven has a more complicated lineage. He is 25% Noldor, 37.5% Human, and 37.5% Sindar. (Source: Published Tolkien materials) - tlof
            • Comment: In my opinion, Legolas, who was a Silvan elf, could not really have golden hair. Usually, only the elves of the Vanyarin race, or the elves of the noble line of Noldorin princes. Thus, I think that the fact that golden-hair had been introduced by Peter Jackson is just to make him more 'outstanding' as the only elf in the fellowship. (All others except Gandalf had dark hair) - Gwindor
            • Comment: Nowhere does Tolkien say that all of any Elvish bloodline has any particular color of hair. It is mentioned with certain characters. And beyond this whole Galadriel and Legolas stuff, Tolkien mentioned in other books that some Elves were redheads. It's an incomplete dominant gene. Check out http://www.luchau.org/writing/elven_genetics.htm for more information. (Source: JRR Tolkien's books) - Adulithien

  • Several cast members got memorabilia from the film as a token of appreciation by Steve Jackson and his wife. Kate Blanchett got the pointed elven ears she wore in the movie cast in bronze (she once said the ears were one of the main reasons for her to do the film), whereas Elijah Wood got a beautiful small box with inside it... one of the two One Ring's used for filming. The other ring was auctioned off shortly after the release of the film to an unknown buyer. - LowD

  • Within 4 weeks of its release, The Lord of the Rings passed the $ 500 million mark worldwide, coming in 13th place of the all-time world wide box office champion holders. Harry Potter grossed over $ 800 million in 10 weeks, on 4th place on the same list. - LowD

  • The very first scene shot for the movie was the scene where the hobbits are hiding under the tree roots from the Ringwraith. The date was October 11. 1999. - Jeremy

  • FOTR has officially surpassed Star Wars: A New Hope in the highest grossing movies category. Fellowship is now ranked #6 just below Independence Day. (as of this writing, 03/31/02). - Jeremy

  • Lord of the Rings is now #5 (04/08/02) in the highest grossing list as it has surpassed Independence Day. It is #26 by the number of people themselves who have seen it. - Jeremy

  • One of the flying monkeys from Wizard of Oz is visible in the scene with the mountain troll. You can see him for a split second before the troll tries to smash Frodo. - Durfmunk
    • Comment: Are you sure it wasn't just a unusually ugly orc that looked kinda like a monkey? - mandie
    • Comment: I think it's the cave troll's hand you see that looks like a flying monkey. - Europeep

  • During the movie, several of the actors did their own stunts. Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas Greenleaf, broke a rib while shooting a scene on horseback. Luckily, he was able to return and continue filming the movie after seeing a doctor. - Eldawen
    • Comment: That's probably why at one point Legolas is riding with a saddle. If I had broken my rib, I wouldn't risk riding bareback!!! - Grace Greenleaf

  • After they finished filming the movie, the 9 members of the Fellowship got tattoos. Each tattoo was the elvish symbol for the number 9 (because that's the number of people in the Fellowship.) - Eldawen
    • Correction: The actors did NOT get tattoos. That is a rumor. Read the official movie guide Sir Ian McKellen tells everyone that it is not true. - I Am a bigger fan then u
      • Correction: The actors did actually get the tattoo of the elvish nine as I have seen a picture of it on Orlando Bloom on a website and also the one on Elijah Wood's stomach. - lando's_lady
      • Correction: When Elijah Wood was on Jay Leno he showed it to the audience on December 17th. It is just above his hip on his right side. - Lord Sauron
      • Correction: I found a link to the transcript of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" when Elijah Wood talks about the tattoo that he and the rest of the fellowship got. Click here for the transcript. - Orange Blossom
      • Correction: The entire Fellowship cast got the the tattoo, all except John Rhys-Davies (sp?), instead, he sent his double to get it. Here's a link all about the tattoo incident. Fellowship Tattoos. (Source: www.theonering.net) - Nilwethiel

  • Most of the actors did their own stunts: Viggo Mortenson had a tooth knocked out when he was doing a sword-fighting scene and the brave guy asked if he could glue his tooth back in before they continued shooting the scene! (Source: Magazine) - Arwen
    • Correction: Viggo Mortenson did do his own stunts but he did not ask to glue any teeth back in. One person just described him as the type of person who would do that. - I Am a bigger fan then u
      • Correction: He did chip a tooth and ask that it be superglued back in so he could finish the scene. This was stated in the "Making of Middle Earth" on the DVD. (Source: Lord of the Rings DVD) - Caillean

  • In the scene just after Frodo has been stabbed by the Ring wraith. They are in the forest and you can see three stone statues among the trees. These statues are most likely the trolls that were arguing over how to eat the Dwarves in the book the Hobbit. - Toad
    • Comment: Actually, Sam says "Look Mr. Frodo. It's Mr. Bilbo's trolls." So they are indeed the trolls from the Hobbit. (Source: extended version DVD) - Elennare

  • Lord of the Rings holds the world record for most latex feet in a movie. They uses over 1600 pairs of latex feet for the Hobbits. They used so many because the latex were only used once. - TAZ
    • Comment: This is a silly 'World Record'. It is like saying "Star Wars holds the world record for most Stormtroopers in a movie", or "The Man With The Golden Gun holds the record for most men with golden guns in a movie". Sheeesh! - Richard

  • In the scene at the end of the movie when Sam is racing after the boat that Frodo is in, he lets out a loud yell though it blends in with all his other noises. The actor Sean Astin had stepped on a large piece of glass and after the scene, he had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital to get stitches. (Source: A LOTR movie guide) - Zola Greenleaf
    • Addition: The glass shard pierced right through his foot. A helicopter flew him from location to the hospital and he was back to work within 24 hours of the accident. To the best of my recollection, he received approximately 20 some stitches. (Source: Television Special) - Aine
    • Correction: Sean Astin did not let out a yell when he stepped on the glass in the lake. The reason they knew something was wrong is that he went DEAD SILENT and just stood still. (Source: DVD extra footage) - Tiarh

  • Stuart Townsend was the actor to play Aragon but was fired after the film was started filming due to creative differences. (Source: http://www.tlotr.com/movie_faq_facts.php) - TAZ
    • Comment: Depending on who you believe, Stuart Townsend left the film voluntarily... he felt that he was too young to play Aragorn and Peter agreed. (Source: Various) - Tiarh

  • Ian Holm, who plays Bilbo Baggins, was the voice of Frodo in the 1970 BBC radio version of Lord of the Rings. (Source: http://www.tlotr.com/movie_faq_facts.php) - TAZ

  • Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) had a tooth knocked out him during filming and requested that the tooth be glued back in. (Source: http://www.tlotr.com/movie_faq_facts.php) - TAZ

  • In the book, as the fellowship is rowing away from Lothlorien, Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel ride a swan shaped ship out to the middle of the river to wish them well on their journey and to share one last meal with them. If you watch the scene carefully, I believe it's on the right hand side of the screen, there really is a swan shaped ship docked by the shore. (Source: My own two eyes) - Eärelen

  • Elijah wood was only 18 when he started filming the movie. Sean Astin was the only hobbit in the Fellowship who was married and had children. Billy Boyd played in the band at Bilbos birthday party. And while shooting scenes for the buckland ferry Dominic Monaghan got a splinter stuck in his foot. He told his fellow hobbits that it must be a huge splinter because the pain was agonizing. When they pulled it out, it was about a centimeter long. (Source: Special Extended DVD) - Lotrfan

  • Here's a neat piece of trivia. In fellowship of the ring, when Gandalf is conferring with Saruman, you get to see Gandalf's ring. This is one of the rings that was forged by the elves. The is seen only briefly, you may need rewind and slow motion to see it. Before Saruman shows Gandalf the stone of Orthanc Gandalf is drinking something. Watch on his hand for a bronze colored ring to be on his hand then not on his hand. Subtle trivia that undoubtedly was added in for true fans. (Source: Watching movie) - Joshua

  • During the scenes where the fellowship were in boats, Orlando Bloom sunk his boat two times by mistake, once with John Rhys-Davies and once with his size double. (Source: funtrivia.com) - UltraViolet

  • For the scenes that were shot in the misty mountains the cast had to be flown to some sites, sean bean is afraid of flying and so walked for two hours to get to the top of the mountain for shooting. (Source: A Rough Guide to the Lord of the Rings) - brew
