Debated Goofs - Commented Goofs - Corrected Goofs - Explained Goofs

  • The battle of Cowpens shows Gen Greene planning the battle and Cornwallis leading his British troops. In actuality Greene and Cornwallis were not at Cowpens. The commanders were Morgan and Tarleton. - pat
  • Gabriel Martin is cut in the neck by a British soldier. When he leave to rejoin the army the next day, there is no trace of a cut. - pat
  • Humor: Near the beginning of The Patriot Benjamin Martin sends his kids to his sister-in-law's. She's wearing a very low cut dress and the camera kind of focuses on her breasts when she says, (about Benjamin's kids) "They're huge." Then later on in the movie when Benjamin returns to his kids she showing off her boobs again when he says, (about his kids) "They're huge! What have you been feeding them!" ;-) - one_eyed_beth
  • There are quite a few scenes in The Patriot where you can clearly see the boom slip down into the picture. One is when the oldest son is outside talking to his dad (Mel Gibson). Whoops! - btrfly124
  • During the camp fire (meeting place) scene where Benjamin is making bullets, first he picks up an American soldier, than when he sets it on the spoon to melt it, it's a redcoat. - ryan
  • Right after Ben Martin (Mel Gibson) destroys the English cargo ship the camera then shows all of the militia riding towards the town. The camera then pans across to show the town, but look again and put it on slow motion and you'll see a power line tower. This is the 1700's. - Joe Toler
  • When Ben Martin rides up holding the flag, the flag in his left hand. The next scene shows it in his right. - pat
  • During the Battle of Cowpens, Ben Martin attempts to rally the troops. He is seen holding his pistol by the barrel. The next scene he is holding it by the handle. - pat
  • During the battle of Camden, British General Ohara is viewing battle through is spyglass. But his vantage point would place him on the American side. - pat
  • In the last battle colonel Harry Burwell fires then puts his gun in his holster right before the charge. Later he pulls the gun out, puts it to a red coat's chest and shoots. Museloader have to be reloaded after every shot. - Joshua farris
  • In the next to the last battle were Gabriel goes after colonel Tavington without Mel, he jumps off his horse and runs down the hill toward the red coats he fires twice without ever reloading his gun. You must reload after each shot with a museloader. - Josh
  • At the start of the Battle of Cowpens, The biggot tells Occum it is October and he is a free man. Actually the Battle of Cowpens was fought in January. - pat
  • Before Cowpens the Continentals are marching to engage the British. Many of the Americans are wearing fresh bandages and battle wounds, when no battles were fought before Cowpens. - pat
  • One scene early in the movie has Gabriel writing his brother Thomas. Gabriel's voice is heard as Thomas reads the letter to his brothers and sisters. Gabriel refers to the death of his friend, Peter Cuppen, at Elizabethtown. For about a three second span it shows him writing the letter, and you can clearly see that he wrote that Peter Cuppen died at Monmouth. They show Cuppen's death in the same scene and it was clearly winter. Because Monmouth was fought on a very hot day in June and Elizabethtown in February, the letter was surely meant to read Elizabethtown. - J. Gegler
  • At the end of the movie where Mel is taking on his enemy one on one, his enemy somehow manages to swipe away Mel's gun which is scene flying off. Mel in his left hand has a bayonet which he is not using. As the scene continues the bayonet disappears from his left hand completely. But wait during this scene put it in slow motion and you will see the bayonet in his side of his stomach for a brief second. Continue using slow motion and you will see a second bayonet magically appear in his side for a brief second. Movie Magic I say. - Coombes
  • In the battle of Cowpens at the end of the movie, Mel Gibson is fighting the Jason Isaacs. When Jason knocks the bayonet out of Mel's hands, the bayonet falls and for a second you can see it bouncing. Not really quality metal. - Jman
  • Near the beginning, after Thomas's death and Gabriel's capture, Benjamin runs into the house to get a few items, among these items are 3 guns and a tomahawk. In the very beginning of the movie it shows what is in the trunk he retrieved them from, his wife's necklace was one of the pieces of value. Yet, when Gabriel and Ann get married, he gives Ann his wife's necklace, but did not take it with him, he had no time to return to his plantation to retrieve it, the British burnt it down. - Bonnie
  • When Benjamin and Gabrial go to the camp where Benjamin's younger children are, his daughter who won't talk to him runns after him crying... while Benjamin and her are crying they skip back and forth from her face to her back. When the camera is on her back, she has two braids tied together in the back, when the camera is on the front of her hair, she has two seperate braids on each shoulder! - KelBel
  • When Gabriel first goes to the church to enlist the men for the militia, a young boy is sitting in the pew to his left. After Anne looks at Gabriel, the boy has moved to a different pew in the back of the church, and another older boy is in his place. - nbp
  • Near the end at the "Cowpens" battle. General Cornwallis is using a handheld telescope (term?) to view the gathering troops. The view through the scope is somewhat fish-eyed with some distortion around the edges. Moments later, Cornwallis looks again (commenting about militia forming at the center) but now there is no distortion. Tavington's scope also shows distortion when he views the battle. So why the switch from a distorted view to non-distorted then distorted again? (VHS) - galina
  • During the scene where Tavington has his soldiers lock the townspeople inside the church. Shutters were made to lock from the inside to keep dangers such as wild animals or attacking Am. Indians, etc OUT, they would not have locked from the outside. (VHS) - galina
  • In the scene were Gabriel shoots the guy who ordered the burning of the church, Gabriel is aiming too high to have shot him in the leg. - robo
  • Before they burn the church filled with the townspeople, it is day. Though when the church is burning 5 minutes later, it is dusk. What is up with that? What is the deal? I guess time slows down because in the whole entire movie the kids do not age one bit. I need some answers here. (VHS) - a + k
  • (Factual errors) One of the biggest factual errors in "The Patriot" is in the use of flintlock pistols. Dragoons and other cavalry carried a brace of pistols as last-ditch weapons. They were notoriously inaccurate and only effective at close range. Yet in "The Patriot", the characters are hitting targets at twenty or thirty yards! Sometimes while riding at a full gallop! - Hist. 101

Commented Goofs

  • In the scene where the British capture 18 men Mel lays his pistol down and he leaves it. - Michael Farris
    • I don't get it. I haven't seen this movie, though, but why is it a goof when Gibson leaves his gun? Is the gun seen later?
    • Comment: Oh I get it! When Michael Farris read "Send A GOOF", he thought it was a PERSON! So he sent his name in! - bitoy
  • In the scene were the bad guy shootes the boy in the back, it hits him in the middle but comes out in the front on the side. - robo
    • Comment: I believe it is possible for a bullet to ricochet off e.g. a bone and change direction.

Corrected Goofs

  • The movie timeline is 1776-1781 and Ben Martin's children do not age in the 6 year period. - pat
    • Correction: The older children do show some signs of aging, but your right not much, but you can also clearly see that Suzanne, the youngest, is much older at the end than she is at the beginning. - Danette
  • This movie was made in 2000, which means Joely Richardson as Charlotte would have to be about 34-35 years old. Yet this movie is set in 1776, and the name Charlotte came out in 1752, which would mean the oldest Joely Richardson could have been is 24 years old! - kyara
    • Correction: Actors and Actresses don't always have the play a part the same age as they are. I don't remember hearing her age at all so she could be playing someone that is 24 years old. - Danette
  • In the scene where Mel is talking to Cornwalis about getting his men back Cornwalis asks his name. Mel replies, "I am a colonel with the continental army, my rank should be sufficent for now." if his rank is sufficient then why did he give it at the beginning of the sentence, he said he was a colonel. isn't that a rank? (VHS) - a + k
    • Correction: Ben Martin meets Cornwallis and refuses gives his name to protect his family. He give Cornwallis his rank of colonel because thats all Cornwallis needs to know start negotiations (that make Ben a senior officer). If Ben was to state he was a major of the continentals or col. of militia, Cornwallis would not speak with. Generals do not negotiate with junior officers or rabble. - pat
  • I believe Ben Martin is talking to Colonel Burwell about how Cornwallis is going to run north to Washington. This may be one of their fears, but there is no place called "Washington" until the late 1790's, unless he is referring to George Washington's estate. - topcatdave
    • Correction: Ben Martin was referring to General Washington, not the place. - pat
  • Someone explain this to me please. After Ben gets all the kids to Charlotte's plantation, Gabriel leaves. Gabriel travels down a lane lined with centuries old moss laden oaks, when a man in a buggy cuts in front of him, leaving a house wide open. Gabriel enters the house, goes upstairs and is drawn to a window through which he views a battle - in a open field-just past what appears to be a main entry to the house but all the oak trees have disappeared. 1. What happened to all the trees? 2. Why did the sounds of an impending battle not draw his attention while traveling down the road? 3. How did he escape the attention of the soldiers? Surely both the Americans & British had lookouts posted. (VHS) - galina
    • Correction: Gabriel is looking into the backyard. You are mistaken by thinking that he is looking at the front entry of the house.
