- When Gandalf and Saruman are talking at
one point Gandalf is holding his staff and
he has a leather strap around his finger,
then it cuts to Saruman then when it cuts
back to Gandalf the strap is gone. (Theatre)
- Kit_Kat
- After the battle with the cave troll, Aragorn
rushes over to the injured Frodo and brushes
past some large rocks which wobble, showing
that they are clearly lightweight and not
real. (Theatre) - Justine
- Hobbits are always barefoot, but when Frodo
and Sare walking through the fields, Frodo's
leg comes above the level of the long grass
- and a shoe is clearly visible. (Theatre)
- Justine
- The hobbit guys are smaller than the rest
of the characters. Fine. But in some scenes,
it's obvious that they used either children
or little people to complete the effect. In
one scene, Bilbo (a hobbit guy) shakes hands
with Gandalf and you can see Gandalf's larger
hands are fake. (Theatre) - Sam
- In some scenes Frodo has a zit, and in some
scenes he doesn't. - Jane
- Addition:
When the fellowship is rowing down river
Anduin, you can clearly see Frodo's got
a spot on his chin covered with makeup.
When they row ashore, it's gone. (Theatre)
- noise
- When Frodo is taken to Rivendell, he is
lying in bed with Gandalf sitting next to
the bed watching over him. When Frodo is just
waking up and starts to lean up, you can clearly
see the ring on the chain. The camera switches
to Gandalf, and then back to Frodo, but the
ring and chain are gone. All you see is the
bandage. (Theatre) - Ree
- At the mountain on their way to Rivendell
with Merry, Pippin, Frodo and Strider the
terrain was clear, then there was a face shot
, and a long view and there was snow on the
hill side. (Theatre) - Lis
- At the beginning, Bilbo drops the Ring on
the hall floor and walks out and Gandalf follows,
leaving the front door wide open. After Bilbo
goes off, Gandalf goes back into Bag End,
but he has to open the door. (Theatre) - lars
- I have my eye on Legolas most of the time,
and in order to see this you have to too.
Some where in the scenes when the ugly pig
people are attacking everyone in the forest...
Legolas shots an arrow and then goes for another
one, but he can't reach it! It cuts to the
next scene very quickly so you have to watch
closely. (Theatre) - Cerasi
- When a meeting is held in Rivendell and
the ring is placed in the center, the dwarf
gets up and hits the ring with his axe, breaking
his axe into pieces on the table in the center.
Then the broken axe pieces disappear. But
then suddenly, they reappear! (Theatre) -
Ahmed Mashhood
- I forgot where, but there are seen brand
marks on the fruit they used in the film.
(Theatre) - Teh'Ailosacath
- In the love scene on the bridge at Rivendell,
there is a wide shot that establishes the
environment, with voice-over of the two characters,
Aragorn and Arwen. They are facing one another,
holding hands. During a silent moment in the
conversation, as they are zooming in, Arwen's
head and mouth are moving as if she is talking,
and Aragorn is clearly listening to her, but
there are no words on the soundtrack (and
any words at that point would be incongruous
with the direction of the conversation). (Theatre)
- veiner
- When Aragorn bows over the dying Boromir
there's a pretty clear goof you can see for
several times. When the shot is from behind
Aragorn, Boromir has his hand on Aragorn's
shoulder, when you see them from the side,
Boromir's right hand is lying flat down on
the ground. (Theatre) - Jonas
- When the Fellowship is resting in the Mines
of Moria, Gandalf has a crystal on his staff
lit. There are also two torches inbetween
the three doorways. These torches are lit
when shown, but when Gandalf remembers the
way and the party is proceeding further into
the mines. As they walk away from the spot,
the light that is illuminating the wall behind
them is a white colored light. Clearly, if
the two lit torches were illuminating that
wall, the light should've been orange colored.
(Theatre) - Quignotz
- In the shots just before Frodo tries to
leave by himself for Mordor the tears on his
face swap sides for no reason. - robo
- (Not to sound perverted) Okay this isn't
really a goof but when Arwen is riding Asfaloth,
she is being chased by the Nazgul on a Mare,
very easy to see when it jumps. When she gets
to the River and it rears, it is easy to see
it is a Stallion. (Theatre) - Erofeb
- After Isildur's father was thrown by Sauron
in the beginning of the movie, he landed with
his helmet on. But when Isildur rushes over
to him, the helmet is off of his head. (Theatre)
- Erofeb
- When rowing away from
Galadriel's forest,the fellowship pass between
two statues of former kings of Gondor. As
they get closer, both kings are holding out
the same arm (the left one), but as the camera
changes angle once they are past them, and
you can see the statues from behind, the statue
on the left is holding out his right arm.
- toddler
- When Frodo and Sam are
walking and Sam stops, he says something like
'This will be the farthest away from home
I'll have been', the scarecrow is like a foot
in front of him. When it shows an overview
of the whole field they are in, the scarecrow
is now like 10 ft behind Sam. Then again when
they get a close up of Frodo and Sam, the
scarecrow move has moved to about a foot behind
Sam. Did the elves do something to that scarecrow
or what? (Theatre) - Aimee
Greenleaf
- The farthest Sam would have ever been away
from home is when he walks into the corn field.
When he stops and says he only has to take
one more step, he is about 5 steps away from
the corn field. (Theatre) - Erofeb
- When Frodo and Sam are walking in The Shire,
there are mountains in the not-so-far-away
background. That's OK if Peter Jackson changed
the layout of Middle Eath but Bilbo says that
he wants to see mountains again. After seeing
mountains behind Frodo and Sam, we hear that
they have not even left The Shire yet... so
those mountains must be in The Shire or close
to it. I think it's just a nice landscape
scene that was used out of place. (Theatre)
- Big Mike
- About half an hour from the beginning of
the movie, Frodo gets ready for leaving The
Shire and gathers his belongings. You see
Frodo putting on his coat, then they cut to
Gandalf. When they cut back to Frodo, he puts
on his backpack/rucksack. But what the heck
is standing/moving behind Frodo? It´s
about twice the size of Frodo, and it may
be his rucksack, but in the next scene, the
rucksack is only about the same size as Frodo.
(DVD/VCD-Rip) - Käpt'n

- After viewing the movie seven times in theatres,
I noticed in the Prancing Pony scene after
Merry sits down, Pippin leaves the table.
But, in the next shot, Frodo gets Barliman's
attenetion and Pippin, not Merry, is still
sitting at the table. It's a back shot of
him though, so viewers who are watching for
the first few times may not notice the difference.
- Katie
- (I just thought this was funny) When Frodo
is packing to leave the Shire, Gandalf is
seen carefully folding a sheet. He then hands
it to Frodo who shakes it out as hard as possible
and rudely shoves it into his bag. Obviously
Wizards are more organized than Hobbits. -
Erofeb
- When Gandalf Fights the Balrog, Frodo stops
running the other 2 hobbits and Legolas run
past him.In the next scene they run by him
again. (DVD) - toddler
- In the English cinema version my friend
said that she saw an apple sticker on the
apple that Aragorn threw to Merry and Pippin.
- Soapy
- After Frodo gets stabbed by the cave troll
the rest of the fellowship just stops and
looks at him. They look at him for about 10
seconds and then he drops to the ground. After
he drops the rest start killing orcs again.
Do the orcs just stop fighting when Frodo
gets stabbed too? (Theatre) - Erofeb
- Arwen, played by Liv Tyler, gets a scar
on right side of her face from a tree branch
when she is rushing Frodo to Rivendale. But
on the movie cover, the scar is on the left
side of her face. - comedykid
- This is the scene after the Balrog initially
shows up in the distance and the Orcs of Moria
all run, yet before the Company has to face
the collapsing staircase: Gandalf tells Aragorn
he has to lead the Company; when Aragorn hesitates,
Gandalf tells him "Go, swords have no
more use here!" (or something to that
effect) in Gandalf's hand you can see the
sword Glamdring...as bent and twisted as a
piece of tin. Not what you would expect from
a great Elven sword, even though it remains
unnamed in this movie. (Theatre) - Munkin
- In one of the scenes when the elf lady is
rinding from the ringwraiths there is a close
up of Frodo and he has some nasty green stuff
on his face it cuts away to a ring wraith's
hand coming toward Frodo then back to Frodo,
he still has the green stuff on his face.
It cuts away again but when it goes to Frodo
again it's gone. (DVD) - nik
- Not really a goof, but Legolas is wearing
boots and in the book there is special mention
of the fact he wears shoes. - JOhnRov
- After Frodo and company leave Bree, there's
a shot of Strider walking towards the camera
(57 mins in). As he passes it a rod or something
on his back smacks into the camera shaking
it slightly. (DVD) - Jim
- When the fellowship is in the dwarf tomb
fighting the cave troll Legolas is in the
lefthand corner of the screen fighting a orc
right after you see him it cuts to the cave
troll for 1 frame then you see Legolas with
2 arrows ready to fire it would be impossible
because a 10th of a second earlier he was
fighting a orc with a sword. (DVD) - toddler
- In the last scene with the dwarf, elf and
human, the feathers on the elf's arrows change
colors from yellow to green the red. - toowide
- In the scene where Gandolf catches Merry
and the other hobbit after they set off the
rocket, Gandolf beard appears to be coming
loose. - toowide
- When the 4 hobbits are hiding by the roadside,
there is a tree on the road above. We can
see either side of this tree. the black rider
emerges to the left of the tree, traveling
right to left across the screen but we never
saw him come in from the right even though
it was in shot the whole time. (Theatre) -
gregmcd101
- In the scene where Frodo is leaving to go
to Mt. Doom and Sam chases him into the water
and Frodo pulls him into the boat, Sam's clothes
and Frodo's arm are dry. Sam was just pulled
from the water and should be soaking wet.
- Britt
- In the part in the beginning when Sauron
blows up and there's that big shockwave right
after Isildur gets blown to the ground it
shows you a knight and he seems to be wearing
glasses and they look pretty modern too! (VHS)
- arwen
- Gandalf's staff changes places several times
on the wagon as he rides up. First it is to
Gandalf's left. Then it moves to his right.
Some shots it is hanging out the back of the
wagon. (DVD) - chrisB
- Frodo's sword does and does not glow blue
when orcs are near. In the scene where the
cave troll is fought, the sword switches on
and off. In the DVD version this has been
corrected somewhat - but it still happens.
According to the book - it glowed all of the
time they were in Moria. - Marcus
- When The fellowship are in the snow, and
Frodo falls backward to Aragorn. Then Aragorn
helps him, the ring fall off his neck (Sean
Bean) picks it up if you as the camera is
still on the ring, and as Sean Bean picks
it up, pause it when the ring is like this
(picture) O the ring is bigger then it normally
is. - lil_dude114
- I am begging to read the book series and
in the book they mention that the Hobbits
have 6 meals a day. But in the movie they
mention all their meals: Breakfast, 2nd breakfast,
elevzes, lunchen, afternoon tea ( which is
a snack or a meal), dinner and supper that
is 7. The makers of the movie should really
pay attention to all parts of the book. -
TAZ
- When Gimli runs in to Balins tomb, he kneels
down right next to the coffin thingy. Then
in the next shot we see he has room enough
to hang his head. Then in the NEXT shot, he
leans over and taps his head on the coffin
thing, magically close again. - Nuinatariel
- When the hobbits enter the Prancing Pony,
only their heads are wet, and their clothes
are dry (it was raining out). Why would their
heads be wet if they were wearing hoods, and
how come their clothes are dry? - Nuinatariel
- If you watch closely when Aragorn is fighting
Lurtz (the big mean, arrow shooting orc for
you slow people), Anduril (Aragorn's sword)
is dropped twice for the same reason! When
Lurtz throws the shield, the Man drops his
sword, and then it switches quickly to the
next scene, somewhat clearly showing the sword
flying away from Aragorn again. (Theatre/DVD)
- Erofeb
- In the scene where Aragorn, Frodo, Sam,
Merry and Pippin are in the woods, having
just left Bree one of them asks " Where
are you taking us?" and Aragorn answers
" Into the wild." As Aragorn moves
off the screen watch carefully and you can
see the top of his bow ( or arrow) knock the
camera, causing it to wobble slightly! - Spemz
- How long can orcs live? At that war in the
beginning you can see that orc with the staple
things on he's nose. some time later, the
same orc is saruman's little hunch man. (VHS)
- geekmeek
- (Revealing mistakes) The Doors of Durin
(entrance to the Mines of Moria) have two
trees carved into them. The tree on the right
side is incomplete. There should be additional
lines between the two tendrils at the top
as on the left side. (DVD) - Todd
Wagoner
- (Continuity) After Aragorn gets thrown by
the cave troll Frodo goes and shakes him awake.
At that time you can see the ring hanging
out of his shirt. The ring is hidden the rest
of the time a few seconds later. Also, while
they are running out of the room where they
were attacked by the cave troll and into the
main hall; they are surrounded by orcs but
sting isn't glowing. (DVD) - mandie
- (Continuity) Kind of near the beginning
of the movie, when Frodo is about to leave
the Shire, when Gandalf pulls Sam in through
the window and plonks him on the table, some
junk that was on the table fell off, of course.
Well, when you see Sam laying there, you can
see some books lying on the floor (that presumably
fell off the table). But after it cuts back
to Gandalf and then back to Sam, they're gone!
And then a few shots later, they're back again!
(VHS) - chrissy
- (Continuity) In the part where Frodo wonders
off, when the orcs attack on the shore...
Frodo has a the ring and it has a necklace
on it, then later on it doesn't, but then
even a little more later, it has it again!
(VHS) - Tight
End
- (Continuity) While the fellowship was in
Moria being attacked by the cave troll the
ring jumps out of Frodo's shirt and back again.
Also while they're surrounded by orcs before
they see the Balrog, Sting is not glowing.
- mandie
- (Continuity) There are lots of close ups
of Frodo's hands fondling the ring, and in
all but one he has extremely small fingernails.
In the scene where they hide from the Wraith
under the tree, his nails are relatively long.
(DVD) - Leo
- (Continuity) In the last battle scene of
the Fellowship, when Aragorn is fighting the
leader of the Uru Kai, Aragorn is thrown against
a tree and his sword clearly flys out of his
hand. But when the Orc throws his sheild at
Aragorn if you watch closely u see again his
sword leaving his hand as the sheild sticks
him against the tree. Clearly bad editing
by the editor. (DVD) - FlyYouFools
- (Continuity) In the scene where Gandalf
arrives at Bilbo's for the first time, and
Bilbo is serving tea, Bilbo at first has 2
curly q's on his forehead. Then the camera
shifts to Gandalf, and then shifts back to
Bilbo and he has 3 curly q's. Once again the
camera shifts back to Gandalf and then the
third time you see Bilbo, he has only 2 curly
q's again. (VHS) - Vicki
- (Revealing mistakes) As Gandalf and Frodo
cross the bridge into the shire, there is
not wind blowing the grass, trees or hair
of any of the inhabitants except for two shots
where the wind is blowing profusely. (VHS)
- Vicki
- (Continuity) After Gandalf throws Sam onto
the table in bag end I realized (after the
15th time seeing it) that when flashing back
and forth between Gandalf and Sam that Sam
moves up and down the table! (Theatre/DVD)
- Legolas'
girl
- (Continuity) When Boromir is shot with the
arrows we flash between him and the uruk hai
leader and while doing this one of the arrows
disapers then reapears later in the scene!
(Theatre/DVD) - Legolas'
girl
- (Continuity) When Frodo awakens in Rivendell
and sits up his nipple is clearly visible.
Then after flashing to gandalf and back to
frodo as he sits up it is clearly covered!
too bad... (Theatre/DVD) - Legolas'
girl
- (Continuity) When Aragorn leans over Boromir
and talks to him, he has blood on his moustache
(left side). But, after Boromir dies and the
camera switches back to him, it's completely
gone! talk about royal blood :P - Censored
- (Continuity) Gandalf and Saruman fight,
in which Saruman takes Gandalf's staff. Later
Gandalf makes his escape on the back of a
giant falcon. Saruman obviously didn't give
the staff back but Gandalf in fact does have
it back later. - idlehand
- (Continuity) In the mines of Moria, right
as the Balrog falls, you can clearly see that
the portion of bridge Gandalf stands on is
smooth, and is the same way when he's pulled
to the edge. Yet, in the next scene with a
close-up shot of him, he's grasping at one
of many cracks that have now appeared randomly
in the bridge. (Theatre/DVD) - Shiari
- (Continuity) When Frodo and Gandalf come
into Hobbiton, Gandalf sets off fireworks
for the children and all of them jump up and
down cheering. There is a girl with bleach
blond hair or white (it is hard to tell [she
is also on the left side of the screen]) who
jumps up and down with the other kids when
the camera is pointing behind her, but then
when the camera is in front of her (she is
now on the right side of the screen) she has
her arms down. There was no point in time
to put her hands down that quickly! - Joel
- (Factual errors) When Legolas goes down
some steps in Rivendell you can hear footsteps
as he walks, how can this be, when Elves are
soundless when they walk? (DVD) - Rory
- (Revealing mistakes) After Aragorn kills
Lurtz and runs over to Boromir, one of the
orc corpses lying on his side raises his head
and looks around! He's easy to spot, as Aragorn
leaps over his head. (DVD) - Grubbs
- (Plot holes) Just before the battle with
Lurtz, Legolas says "we should cross
the river now" or something like that
and Aragorn goes "No! Orcs patrol the
eastern shores, we shall wait for cover of
darkness!" but the whole thing about
orcs is that they can't travel in light so
Aragorn was completely wrong and because of
him Boromir died (which is no great loss but
hey!) - Ringwraiths
no.1 fan
- (Plot holes) When Frodo and Bilbo put the
ring on (though obviously not at the same
time) they become invisible. So how come at
the beginning when Sauron arrives and he's
wearing the ring, how come he's not invisible?
(DVD) - Ally
- (Misc.) During Bilbo's Party, when the cake
is passing through the scene, you see Billy
Boyd helping another Hobbit to carry the cake.
In the scene directly after that when you
see Elijah Wood dancing, you see Billy Boyd
playing the "bongo" (instrument
is not mentioned by Tolkien) in the Hobbit
band. (DVD Directors Cut) - Aratwathien
- (Continuity) In Isengard when Gandalf and
Saruman fight over joining Sauron, Saruman
takes Gandalf's staff. He traps gandalf on
the ceiling, without the staff. Later in Rivendell
when Frodo awakes, Gandalf has the staff back
again. - matt the spoon
master
- (Continuity) When the party just reaches
the other side of the river, and they realize
that Frodo is missing they show Gimli with
his beard done with a straight part in the
middle and one braid on either side. When
they reach the scene when Boromir dies, Gimli's
beard is simply two braids. - Mishka
- (Audio/visual unsynchronised) In Moria
when Gandalf is talking to Frodo saying something
like, "Bilbo was meant to have the ring
and therefore you too, were meant to have
it..." There is a segment that Gandalf's
head is wiggling in speech mode but he isn't
actually saying anything. - Mishka
- (Plot holes) The first time I saw it in
the theatre (opening night), at the end of
the movie when Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas
decide to follow the orcs, Aragorn says, "Leave
all that can be spared behind, we travel light."
It clearly showed Legolas leaving a sword
behind. Accuracy: Legolas as an elf wouldn't
be overburndened by a little sword and Gimli
as an high endurance dwarf wouldn't notice
extra weight. If anyone had need to travel
light, it would have been the person with
human blood in him, so who exactly was this
comment directed to? The other two times I
saw it in the theatre, the scene with Legolas
leaving the sword behind was cut and it also
isn't on the regular or extended version DVDs,
so someone must have realised their error.
- Mishka
- (Plot holes) In the movies you can clearly
see the shards of narsil in Rivendell, and
the hilt of narsil in the prologue, but after
the fellowship leaves Rivendell Aragon should
be carrying the newly reforged Narsil, now
called Anduril, but he is still carrying his
old ranger sword. I have watched the DVD many
times and have paused on shots of the sword.
(DVD) - craig
- (Revealing mistakes) I always wondered how
the how they enabled the actors to walk in
the snow on the Gehadras (sp?) scene without
their feet and legs freezing. Then while watching
the DVD on progressive scan, I noticed some
type of a line on Frodo's calves and the rubber
socks were quite visible. Look at Frodo's
left leg after he rolls down the snowy mountain
and loses the ring from around his neck. -
olbinatah
- (Revealing mistakes) When you first see
Rivendell, and there are horses with elves
on them riding on a path at the right of the
screen, you can clearly see that the Rivendell
in that scene is a picture because the water
is not moving on the water fall.
- (Continuity) In the scene after Bilbo puts
on the ring at his party he goes back to his
hole. Gandalf is looking down on him near
the fire as Bilbo moves to the left placing
himself between Gandalf and the fire. First,
Gandalf's gaze never follows Bilbo but remains
locked on the spot where he stood and second,
Bilbo casts no shadow on Gandalf as his robe
is clearly illuminated by the flames, then
Bilbo moves right and clearly alters the light
in the rest of the dim hole. - McFrodo
- (Factual errors) In the beginning of the
movie Gandalf crosses a bridge in the shire.
In the background you see a watermill (anyway
so we call it in Holland) Loot at the wheel,
it turns the wrong way. Since it is above
the water, the current can't play any role.
So it must be fed at the left side and therefore
should turn around left, but instead it turns
clockwise. - Alfred
